How headlines will be generated for multilingual websites

Information has recently emerged from Google regarding the modification of title tags for web pages that feature content in multiple languages. Specifically, if the content of a site is presented not in the language of the title tag, then the latter will be altered. This is precisely why Google recommends that webmasters ensure consistency between the language of the site’s content and its meta tags.

One of the most common approaches is to include a translation in English of the title tag that existed previously. For example:

中国名胜 – Sights of China

The title ultimately consists of two parts, separated by a hyphen. The text on both sides of the hyphen is identical but written in different languages (in Chinese and English). In this case, the site’s content is exclusively provided in Chinese. If Google detects this discrepancy, it will show to users only part of the title that is rendered in Chinese.

Furthermore, if a variation of the title appears in the Title tag, Google will automatically generate the title in the language that is present on the web page.

It should also be noted that last summer Google introduced a completely new method for formatting resource titles in search results, which left many specialists quite dissatisfied. By the fall, this system had been improved. It was also reported that in Search Console, a feature to notify about title errors was more widely implemented, but it has not yet been created.

Ultimately, professionals in the field have turned to Google with a request to rectify a limitation that hinders the modification of meta tags. As of now, they have not received a response from Google.
